Summer 2024 Fresh Air Camp Highlights
In the blink of an eye, another Fresh Air summer has flown by! It seems like just yesterday that it was the first day of camp and families were giving their children one final hug before they boarded the bus. Fast forward to the end of camp and we’ve made more memories than we can count!
Summer 2024 was full of so many special moments. The bonds between campers and counselors and the new experiences are ones that will be cherished forever. It wouldn’t be possible to summarize the whole summer in one blog, so here are a few of our favorite highlights.
Connecting with nature
One of campers’ favorite parts of their summers with The Fresh Air Fund is spending time outside in nature. From overnight hikes to mornings at the farm to afternoons on the lake, there are countless opportunities to connect with the environment!
Campers find different ways to immerse themselves in nature. While some enjoy hiking and being in the woods, others enjoy learning about the environment and different animals that inhabit it!
“My favorite thing to do at camp is hiking,” shared Jeremiah, 14, from Camp Tommy. “I really enjoy seeing the forest and being in nature. It’s a totally different feeling from being in the city, so I try to take advantage of that.”
At the Camp Model Farm, children learn about environmental awareness and the life cycle of food. They have the chance to meet the different animals, explore the garden and even sample some fruits and vegetables!
“The farm is my favorite part about camp,” said Hidden Valley camper Raven, 10. “I really like the bunny because it’s so cute and fluffy!”
Practicing teamwork
Teamwork is an essential part of camp. This summer, children participated in many activities that required communication and cooperation, such as completing a photography scavenger hunt, playing team sports or tackling the high ropes course. Afterall, there’s no better time to get to know a new friend than when you’re suspended in the air 50 feet above the ground!
“I like the high ropes course because I get to socialize more and build connections by working as a team,” shared Alexa, 14, from Camp Junior.
Challenging yourself
This summer, campers were encouraged to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. Whether that was swimming for the first time or archery, counselors supported campers as they tried new experiences.
“Camp is fun because you get to explore new things and try new things. At camp, I work on my strengths while also working on my weaknesses,” said Delant, 13, from Camp Mariah.
Challenging yourself to try something new provides opportunities for personal growth and helps campers develop a greater sense of independence.
“I’m being independent at camp because I do things here, like make my bed and try cooking or photography classes. I’ve never done that at home before,” shared Yanki, 14, from Camp Junior.
Exploring your creative side
Our campers are creative! They painted portraits, photographed nature, sewed mini stuffed animals, made collages and more in their arts and crafts classes. They also choreographed dances and learned new chords on the guitar and keyboard in their music classes.
“My favorite thing about camp is dance! You get to try new things, new styles and new dances you’ve never done before. You’re also around new people that you’ve never danced with,” said Kimora, 15, at Camp Mariah. “I really enjoy the dance class because it’s a place to meet new people, learn new things and overcome your fears.”
Looking back at the past summer, we are filled with gratitude for everyone who made it possible. The memories made will certainly last a lifetime, and we are already counting down the days until next summer!
