Once a camp only for boys, the Fresh Air Fund’s Camp Tommy will now serve all young people looking to develop leadership skills.
“We help them with how they want to work with others in community,” said Camp Tommy Director Kanston McIver. “They can not only do those structures here at camp, but they can take what they’re learning back to their actual communities in New York City.”
Arielle Harrison is one of the new campers at Camp Tommy, but she’s been coming to the Fresh Air Fund since she was 7 years old. She says she loves being able to shadow current counselors and interact with other campers.
“We’re with these girls for different days of the week and they always get so excited to see me come back,” she said. “I’ve grown bonds with most of them and they said that they feel like I’m their mother. So, it’s a great little relationship that I have with them.”
