2025 Spring Benefit Recap: Announcing The Launch of the New Leadership Program at Camp Tommy

At The Fresh Air Fund’s 2025 Annual Spring Benefit, we celebrated the launch of the new Leadership Program at Camp Tommy and applauded two participants as they took to the stage to share powerful, heartfelt stories about what camp means to them and what they love most about the experience.
Inspiring Youth Stories

Jai’den, 13, had a lot to share about all of the “first” experiences he had at Camp Mariah. “I caught my very first fish, something I always dreamed of doing but never had the chance to, and I also perfected my swimming skills.”
Jai’den reflected on his journey from beginner to advanced swimmer, joking that swimming in a lake took some getting used to. What once felt impossible, like treading water and swimming multiple laps, became milestones he proudly accomplished.

“At camp, I learned that what first seems out of reach, I can accomplish. I may need help from counselors or friends — but I’m so much more confident trying something new and I’ve taken that home with me.”

Mia, 18, who’s been part of The Fresh Air Fund since the age of 9, will be studying occupational therapy at LaGuardia Community College, a career path she discovered while leading dance classes at Camp ABC.

Mia plans to return to Camp ABC this summer, where her camp adventures began over a decade ago, as a member of the admin team. “I had incredible opportunities to explore and grow. It was an entirely new experience for me, being in nature and outside of the city,” Mia shared. “I’m excited to inspire young campers to be leaders just like my counselors helped me learn to become a leader.”
The Future of Camp Tommy
Kanston McIver, who began his Fresh Air journey over 10 years ago as a general counselor at Camp Hidden Valley, shared what sparked his love for summer camp and the experiences and connections that inspired him to return summer after summer, eventually becoming the Director of Camp Hidden Valley. Kanston is now The Fresh Air Fund’s Learning and Development Manager and Director of Camp Tommy, which will launch a new curriculum focused on Learning to Lead this summer.

As part of Camp Tommy’s Leadership Program, youth age 15-17 will participate in dynamic and engaging leadership and skill-building workshops. This new curriculum is designed to create a space where campers can define leadership on their own terms and feel seen, heard and empowered. Alongside beloved traditional activities — like the ropes course, boating, archery and swimming — campers will also have the opportunity to choose a goal-oriented special focus, allowing them to build confidence, develop new skills and achieve new milestones in a supportive and creative environment.
“If someone excels at swimming, they will train to become a junior lifeguard,” said Kanston. “By the fourth camp session, they’ll be helping ensure water safety at our other camps. If they’re drawn to our camp model farm, they’ll work side by side with our camp farmers. They’ll have the chance to facilitate activities at the garden, the barn or nutrition center.” Campers who complete the program will also be eligible for a stipend.

Kanston envisions Camp Tommy as a mini college campus that’s full of energy, exploration and pride. “A place where campers don’t just ask, ‘What am I doing here?’ but instead, ‘What legacy do I want to leave behind?” And that’s what Camp Tommy is: a place where leadership is about legacy, connection and community.”
Kanston and The Fresh Air Fund are excited for an unforgettable summer at Camp Tommy—and were thrilled to celebrate our incredible campers and alumni at this year’s Spring Benefit.
